Curriculum

The academic program is organized on an A/B block schedule. Students may earn four credits each semester, with the potential to earn eight credits per year. Classes meet for 90 minutes each every other day.

The following AP® courses are offered: Art: Studio Drawing, Art: Studio 2-D Design, Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, Computer Science, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, Environmental Science, Government and Politics: United States, Human Geography, Macroeconomics, Physics I, Psychology, Statistics, United States History and World History. AP world language and culture courses offered include French and Spanish. The AP program at James Bowie High School is an open-enrollment program.

Honors/Pre Advanced Placement classes are offered in Academic Decathlon, Algebra I, Algebra II,Art, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Information Application, English I, English II, French III, French IV, Spanish III, Physics, Spanish III for Spanish Speakers, Spanish IV, Spanish Literature and World Geography.

The Project Lead the Way curriculum provides an opportunity for students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics with an opportunity to take the following PLTW certified courses: Introduction to Engineering Design, Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics and Engineering Design and Development. Students interested in Biomedical Science have an opportunity to take the following PLTW certified courses: Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, Medical Interventions and Biomedical Innovation. These courses receive weighted GPA.

The Dual Enrollment Program enables juniors and seniors to enroll in college courses for which they may receive high school and college credit. Dual Enrollment courses offered include United States History, Psychology, Sociology, United States Government, Economics and English IV.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme® is available for students to apply for admission as diploma candidates at the beginning of their junior year.  James Bowie High School offers twenty seven courses in six subject groups. The following IB® courses offered: AB Initio Spanish I SL, AB Initio Spanish II SL, Biology HL, Biology SL, Chemistry SL, Computer Science SL, English III HL, English IV HL, Film HL, Film SL, French III SL, French IV HL, History of the Americas HL, Information Technology in a Global Society HL, Information Technology in a Global Society SL, Math HL, Math SL, Math Studies SL, Music HL, Music SL, Physics SL, Psychology SL, Spanish III SL, Spanish IV SL, Theory of Knowledge, Visual Art HL and Visual Art SL.

Rank

Rank in class is determined by the courses taken in residence during the regular term for which the student receives a grade and counts towards graduation. Course grades receiving three units shall be included three times in average. Students are officially ranked at the end of each semester and all students are included in computing class rank. All honor graduates are determined at the end of the fifth six-week period of the senior year. Honor graduates will be students in the following categories of the senior class:

Valedictorian – highest grade point average Salutatorian -   second highest grade point average

Summa Cum Laude – top 2 percent (includes valedictorian/salutatorian) Magna Cum Laude – top 10 percent

Cum Laude – top 20 percent

To be considered for Summa Cum Laude honors a student must have been enrolled for the final four semesters at James Bowie High School.
