Young students bring MLK’s legacy to life

At Young Junior High School, seventh graders don’t just learn about Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy – they bring it to life.

For the past nine years, the school’s English department has inspired students to honor MLK Day by serving their community in meaningful ways.

“It’s always so worth it,” said English teacher Kayla Long. “It’s so heartwarming and fulfilling to see our students making a difference in the community.”

This year, students took action all across Arlington. They cleaned parks, volunteered at local churches, read books to students at Remynse Elementary and spent time at Mission Arlington. The school even partnered with local organization Hagar’s Heart, creating bracelets and writing heartfelt letters for care boxes that support victims of domestic violence.

“It’s so amazing that these students can be leaders at the age that they are,” Long said. “It’s even better to be able to show them how proud we are of them.”

You may have even seen the students in action on Fox 4, where they highlighted the students’ work, showcasing how small acts of kindness can drive powerful change.

“I am immensely proud of the students and the teachers for fostering such an impactful project,” said Young principal Kirsten Lundin. “It’s not just an act of service – it’s a great way of teaching responsibility and care for the community. Plus, the ripple effect of these good deeds could inspire even more people to take positive actions. It’s a win for everyone involved!”
