Bud Remynse

Bud Remynse was born in 1937 in Kalamazoo, Mich., and he and his family moved to Arlington in 1950. Remynse attended Arlington High School and played football, graduating in 1955. He attended Ranger Junior College on a football scholarship, and he completed his bachelor’s at Arlington State College. Remynse received a master’s in education and a secondary administrator certification from North Texas State.

Remynse began his teaching and coaching career at Carter Junior High in 1961. He was a coach and physical education teacher. He moved to Sam Houston High School in 1967, working under Principal Harold Key as a b-team coach and P.E. instructor. He became the principal of Sam Houston in 1972. Remynse spent 22 years at Sam Houston, earning the nickname Mr. Sam Houston, and he was always supportive of Sam Houston activities during his time there.

Remynse also became known as “Uncle Bud” to students after his niece attending Sam Houston refused his request to call him Mr. Remynse, saying, “You have always been my Uncle Bud and you will always be Uncle Bud to me.” Remynse’s interaction with students, teachers and parents earned him a reputation of “having a knack of making each kid at [Sam Houston High School] feel like he knew them and liked them,” said Lila Davis, a journalism instructor at the school. Remynse participated in many pep rallies, even dressing once as Tarzan, swinging from a rope installed in the rafters of the gym.

Remynse and his wife Judy had two sons Todd and Chad. Bud died after complications from heart surgery in October of 1988 at the age of 51.
