The purpose of this course is to develop music skills and provide information that will lead to an understanding of the practice of music, especially for those considering a music major or minor in college. Students will gain knowledge of terminology, notation skills, harmonization through dictation, basic composition and analysis of the melodic line, ear-training and sight-singing skills. It is recommended students be an active member of choir, band or orchestra or have basic performance skills in voice or an instrument. After completing this course, students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Music Theory exam given by the College Board.
