Shatter the Silence

Human Trafficking Awareness & Prevention

Human trafficking is a real thing in DFW and can even affect us here in Arlington. With major events like the World Cup coming to Arlington, the threat – and reality – of human trafficking in our community may be greater than ever before. That’s why Arlington ISD is providing this website. It’s meant to help all of us understand what human trafficking is and what the risks are, so we can work together to keep all of our children and families safe. Scroll down for more information about the threat, how you can help your children and community stay safe, and what to do if you suspect someone has been trafficked.

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is the exploitation of a person through force, fraud, or coercion for labor or commercial sex. It can happen to anyone – regardless of age, gender, or background – and often occurs in ways that are difficult to recognize.

Traffickers may use manipulation, relationships, promises of money or opportunity, or online platforms to target victims. Youth are especially vulnerable, particularly through social media and peer connections.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Parents, caregivers, and community members should be aware of potential red flags in loved ones, including:

  • Sudden changes in behavior or appearance
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Unexplained gifts, money, or expensive items
  • Excessive secrecy about online activity
  • Signs of fear, anxiety, or control by another person
  • A student frequently absent or disengaged from school

No single sign confirms trafficking, but patterns can indicate a need for concern.

Talking to Your Child

Open, ongoing conversations are one of the most effective prevention tools.

Tips for parents:

  • Talk about healthy vs. unhealthy relationships
  • Discuss online safety and digital boundaries
  • Encourage your child to trust their instincts
  • Let them know they can come to you without fear of punishment
  • Reinforce that no one should ask them to keep secrets or do things that make them uncomfortable
