Emma Ousley was born in Fort Worth in 1906 and graduated from Paschal High School.  She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from North Texas Teachers College.

After teaching and coaching basketball in Bedford and Seagoville, Ms. Ousley joined the Arlington High School staff as an English and journalism teacher in the 1940s. Under her direction, students published a weekly student newspaper, The Colt. The publication was noted for its professional quality.

Just months after her death in 1956, Arlington High School moved from the corner of Abram and Cooper to its present site on Park Row and Cooper. The old site was converted to a junior high and renamed Emma Ousley Junior High School. It was Arlington ISD’s first junior high school. In 1968, the building was sold to the University of Texas at Arlington for campus expansion. Ousley Junior High was reopened in 1997 at its current location in South Arlington.
