Adams Elementary is named in honor of former Arlington High School principal James Adams and his wife, Barbara, a longtime teacher at Hill Elementary.

James worked in the AISD for 38 years and served as teacher, counselor and administrator at four AISD schools before being named principal at Arlington High School, where he remained for 15 years before retiring in 2008. As principal, he lead the school through significant changes including the addition of the freshman class to the high school, building expansions to accommodate the additional 1,000 students and the implementation of the International Baccalaureate Programme.

Barbara taught at three elementary schools in the AISD for 38 years. In addition to teaching at Hill Elementary, she served as team leader and school technology trainer, worked on several district curriculum committees, and sponsored the school spelling bee, yearbook, science fair and senior reunion.

James and Barbara have two daughters, Jennifer Webb and Melissa Nicholson. Like their parents, they both teach in the AISD. Jennifer teaches at Moore Elementary, and Melissa teaches at Short Elementary. Their son-in-law Gary Webb teaches and coaches at Lamar High School.
