Q&A with trustee Larry Mike

January is School Board Recognition Month, and our trustees are more than worthy of the honor. Our board members volunteer their time and expertise to guide the direction of Arlington ISD, investing in our entire community’s future.

Today, we’re catching up with trustee Larry Mike. The Air Force veteran is the newest member of the board, elected in 2024.

What are you most excited about for the district as we enter 2026?

I’m thrilled to see the exciting positive changes happening in Arlington ISD! We’re building stronger services that boost students’ curriculum, create engaging learning environments, and drive real success for every child. This collaborative effort unites specialists across the district to provide coordinated, customized support so every student can truly thrive.

Reflect on a moment from this past year that reminded you why you serve on the Arlington ISD Board of Trustees.

The moment(s) that really stick with me are when Arlington ISD students go all in on those drawings and cards. They grab crayons or markers and make these colorful, heartfelt thank-yous for volunteers who came to read to them, or they draw their big dreams of the future, their vision of leadership. You can feel the gratitude and imagination jumping off the page. It shows our children are full of heart, creativity, and hope, even when things are tough. Moments like that make you think, yeah, our future’s in good hands with them.

Look ahead to 2026 and highlight one hope or priority you are excited to support as a trustee.

I’m excited to see our Arlington ISD children reaching the high academic levels I know they’re capable of. We’ve got exceptional students here, and with the strong foundation we’re building through targeted supports and campus-focused plans, our children have every chance to flourish and shine. It’s full of hope: together, we’re setting the stage for brighter futures, and it’s exciting to watch our students step into their potential.

What is your favorite City of Arlington annual festival/parade/tradition?

The one that really stands out to me is the 4th of July parade here in Arlington. Texas summer heat is brutal in July, yet people still line the streets and stand out in that scorching sun to watch and cheer on the floats, bands, and marchers. To me, that shows the real commitment our community has. When it matters, when it’s time to show up and support each other or our city, folks are there, no excuses. It’s a clear sign of the pride and togetherness we have in Arlington.

Tell us about a campus tradition, event, or student activity you secretly look forward to every year.

Reading to Arlington ISD elementary students is one of my favorites. I secretly hunt for costumes to get the biggest reactions from the kids, and Spiderman is hands-down the winner every time. Those excited shouts and wide eyes are the best. I’m still looking for a good Iron Man one that’s comfy for reading and easy to see through, because the Marvel heroes always get huge cheers.

Reveal one thing you learned from students this year?

I’ve learned that if your birth year starts with 19, that’s basically equivalent to 875 BC.
