Arlington ISD’s Board of Trustees held it’s only meeting of the month on Dec. 11, and here are a few of the highlights.
A sixth grader from Swift Elementary – Be’Oncka Wright – started the meeting by leading the pledges of allegiance. Thank you, Be’Onka.
Then, students from Gunn Junior High and Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy made the meeting feel like a Christmas party. The school’s Symphonic Band, directed by Jason Crump, brought holiday cheer with a fantastic, fun performance of We Wish You a Merry Christmas! Thank you, Gators!
The festivities continued as the board honored the December student of the month, Bowie High School senior Constance Watkins. Constance is a walking smile! She’s always positive and is such a light on Bowie’s campus. Constance is an outstanding and busy student, involved in choir, theatre, AVID, and more. Congratulations, Constance!
Clearly, Arlington ISD has incredible students, and we want to make sure they all get the best possible educational experience. That’s why we conduct annual student surveys with all sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th grade students. The board received a report during the meeting about the survey that was conducted in the spring. The results and insight offered by the survey help the board and district better serve students.
Later, the board received an update on planning for the academic calendar for the 2026-2027 school year. The latest calendar draft incorporates input from parents, staff, and the community. They’re getting close to completing the calendar and will let you know when it’s finalized.
The board also heard an update on the progress that the Capital Needs Steering Committee has made so far, including a bus tour they took on Monday evening with visits to Rankin, Blanton and Crow elementary schools. The committee is assessing district facilities and capital needs and will report to the board in January. You can keep up with the committee and offer your input at aisd.net/cnsc.
Finally, the board appointed the district’s new Chief Technology Officer, Kyle Berger. Kyle is bringing a wealth of technology leadership experience. Welcome, Kyle! And then the board appointed Alexis Palacios as the district’s internal auditor. She’s already been doing a great job as the interim internal auditor, and will now continue in that role permanently.
Those are just a few of the highlights from the meeting. If you would like more details on any of these, or any of the items not covered in the Board Brief, please click here to watch the entire meeting.
