Project Status: Open
UPDATE: Joey Rodriguez Junior High School is now open. The new school welcomed students for the first time on Aug. 13, 2025. Rodriguez replaces Carter Junior High, which opened in 1958.
Construction of the new junior high school started in the fall of 2023 on the former site of Knox Elementary School.
The new Joey Rodriguez Junior High building is approximately 155,000 square feet and ranges in height from the three-story classroom blocks on the north, to single-story administration office space with a one-and-a-half-floor media center above. The new facility includes 48 classroom spaces, including CTE classrooms, break-out and collaboration spaces, teacher workrooms and offices. There are performing arts classrooms for band, orchestra, drama, choir, and art, along with rooms for SPED programs, science labs and a storm shelter. Outdoor spaces include a new entry plaza and canopy, a regulation synthetic turf football field with a four-lane track, bleachers, press box, concessions and restrooms.
