Arlington ISD Police Academy is the real deal
It’s not every day you get to see a drone show – let alone two! But for Sam Houston High School law one students, that was just the beginning of their deep dive into the world of law enforcement in the Arlington ISD Police Academy.
The Police Academy is a yearlong, hands-on program at the Dan Dipert Career and Technical Center designed to give students a head start in criminal justice careers. Under the guidance of Arlington Police Officer Chris Holder and a team of dedicated APD officers, students gain real-world training while earning two high school elective credits.
“It’s a very experiential class,” Holder said. “You get to see some of the real stuff.”
Holder and his students delivered a presentation in addition to the drone shows to educate Sam’s students on the opportunities available through the academy. Juniors can apply and begin the academy as seniors.
“The experience we’ve been exposed to with Officer Holder’s career and even getting to ride out with APD officers, it’s really great if you want to go into this career,” said Bowie High School senior and Police Academy member Jayden Kitchens. “I’m getting the experience and knowledge to help me in the academy and in college.”
From training with SWAT and K-9 to riding in the back of police cars, the program is the real deal.
But the academy isn’t just about training. It’s also about building lasting connections.
“We’re a team, and I love every single one of these people in this academy,” Kitchens said. “The connections with the other officers I’ve made along the way, I know I can always reach out.”
And if you’re looking to join the Arlington ISD Police Academy, Kitchens has the right advice.
“Push yourself,” he said. “Never stop.”
