Reading builds a strong foundation
Reading with your child isn’t just fun, it’s also one of the most important things you can do with your child.
“Reading with young children isn’t just about learning words – it builds the foundation for how they think, listen, and view the world,” said Dr. Elena Guerrero, Arlington ISD director of instruction and curriculum for pre-K through second grade. “When we read together early on, we boost vocabulary, strengthen bonding, and build the confidence children need to succeed when they step into the classroom.”
The impact of reading at a young age lasts a lifetime. In fact, research shows that if a student reads or is read to for 20 minutes a day, they’ll likely score in the top 10% on standardized tests (Nagy and Herman 1987).
“That amount of reading will change the trajectory of their academic future,” said Kooken Educational Center’s librarian Mary Eldredge. “But even more than that, they now have wonderful memories.”
