Posted in , on October 28, 2025

Two ceremonies. Two pathways. One incredible achievement.

More than 200 Arlington ISD students were honored this month in two inspiring ceremonies at the district’s Center for Visual and Performing Arts. Though their journeys were different, their accomplishment was the same – earning the prestigious Global Seal of Biliteracy.More than 200 students earn Global Seal of Biliteracy

The Global Seal of Biliteracy is an international credential that recognizes proficiency in two or more languages. This award validates language skills and can lead to advanced placement in language programs, as well as increased opportunities for scholarships and careers.

“Language is a powerful tool that opens doors to new cultures, ideas, and opportunities,” said Dr. Jackeline Orsini, Arlington ISD director of World Languages. “By offering diverse language programs, we empower our students to become global citizens, ready to succeed in a multicultural world.”

The first group of honorees earned the recognition by demonstrating exceptional mastery on their Advanced Placement Language and Culture exams.

The second group developed biliteracy through Arlington ISD’s dual language pathway, a program that begins in elementary school and continues through high school. These students started at Corey or Jones Academy of Fine Arts and Dual Language, continued at Gunn Junior High and Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy, and now attend Arlington High School and Fine Arts and Dual Language Academy.More than 200 students earn Global Seal of Biliteracy

“When we started this program nearly 11 years ago, it was just a hope, and seeing that vision come to life fills me with the most pride,” said Jones principal Katiuska Herrador, who has been at the school since its inception. “This achievement is a testament to the students’ hard work and commitment to bilingualism and biliteracy, as well as to the incredible teachers who have guided and supported them along the way. I remember when they were so tiny, just starting kindergarten, and now seeing them thriving in high school with endless possibilities ahead is heartwarming. What an incredible journey!”

Dr. Ruth Martin, program coordinator for the Global Seal of Biliteracy and a lead specialist for the Arlington ISD World Languages Department, knows firsthand the power of biliteracy and bilingualism. Originally from Spain, she’s seen how language can open doors.

“Being bilingual has opened so many doors for me,” Martin said. “As the program coordinator, I am thrilled to provide students with this internationally recognized award. I can’t wait to hear about the future opportunities, such as scholarships, internships and employment that students will be able to access through their Global Seal of Biliteracy awards.”

Through the Arlington ISD Department of World Languages, the district applies on behalf of qualifying students for the Global Seal of Biliteracy certification. Students who meet the requirements receive official diplomas and are recognized with medals or pins, symbols of their exceptional linguistic achievement and global readiness.
