Areli Hernandez-Zuniga passes on ‘beautiful traditions’
It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, and we’re celebrating by spotlighting several Arlington ISD staff members about their Hispanic heritage. Today, we’re highlighting Areli Hernandez-Zuniga, a fifth grade teacher at Starrett Elementary.
We caught up with Hernandez-Zuniga and asked her a few questions about her Hispanic heritage and time in Arlington ISD.
〉 What do you love most about your role in Arlington ISD?
What I love most about my role in Arlington ISD is having the opportunity to work with students and make a positive impact in their lives. I love being able to support them, encourage them, and be someone they can count on. I also love being part of a school community that is so supportive and encouraging. I have an amazing admin and team that work together to support our students and one another. I am grateful to be in an environment where I feel valued and where we all share the same goal of helping our students be successful.
〉 What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
To me, Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate my culture, my roots, and my family. It is a time to recognize and honor the scarifies, hard work, and traditions that have been passed down from one generation to another. I am especially grateful for my parents and all the hard work and sacrifices they have made for our family. Seeing how hard they work and everything they have done for me reminds me to appreciate where I come from and the opportunities I have today. It is also a time to celebrate the beauty of our culture through our music, food, language, and family. Hispanic Heritage Month reminds me to be proud of my roots, appreciate those around me and everything they have taught me, while continuing to share my culture and traditions with others.
〉 How do you celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month?
I celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by spending time with my loved ones, listening to traditional music, and dancing! I also celebrate by enjoying traditional foods, learning more about my culture and heritage, and sharing my traditions with others.
〉 Do you have a favorite tradition, dish, etc. from your heritage?
One of my favorite dishes are enchiladas potosinas! Growing up, I would make them with my mom, and we would spend time together preparing them. After making them I would always eat them with my dad and spend time with him. My grandma would also make enchiladas potosinas and sell them to other people. I was part of her business by eating them whenever I had a chance! I was her most loyal customer. These memories make enchiladas potosinas more than just my favorite dish. They remind me of my family, my childhood, and the traditions we share.
〉 What do you hope to pass on to the next generation about your heritage?
I want to pass on the values of being hardworking, loving, and caring for family. I want them to feel proud of their roots and where they come from. I hope they continue to celebrate our culture, traditions, music, and dances and understand that their traditions are part of where we come from and who we are. Most importantly, I want them to spread love, feel empowered and confident on who they are! Be proud of their heritage and keep these beautiful traditions alive for generations to come.
