The Purpose of Assessment
Assessment is an essential and integrated component of the teaching and learning process. It is not an isolated event or endpoint, but a continuous process that provides students with meaningful opportunities to demonstrate understanding, monitor progress toward mastery, apply learning in authentic ways, and extend thinking. Our assessment system exists to improve teaching and learning by measuring student learning, guiding instructional decisions, and supporting continuous growth and achievement for every student.
We believe assessment should support learning rather than interrupt it. Assessment practices are intentionally planned, aligned to learning goals, and embedded within instruction to ensure that teaching, learning, and assessment function as a cohesive system. Through a balanced assessment framework—including formative, interim, benchmark, screening, diagnostic, and summative measures—each assessment serves a clear and distinct purpose in supporting learning, monitoring progress, and evaluating outcomes.
Beliefs About Student Learning
We believe every student can learn at high levels and should be provided multiple opportunities and pathways to demonstrate their learning. Assessment practices should generate timely, relevant, and actionable information that informs instructional decision-making and helps educators adjust Tier 1 instruction, provide targeted intervention, and create opportunities for enrichment and extension based on individual student needs. Assessment data should strengthen educator practice, support differentiated learning experiences, and drive responsive instruction that promotes success for all learners.
Using Assessment to Improve Instruction
Assessment data, both qualitative and quantitative, should be used responsibly and purposefully to support continuous improvement at every level of the district. Students should be empowered to understand their progress, reflect on their learning, and take ownership of their growth. Teachers should use assessment evidence to inform instruction, strengthen Tier 1 teaching, and respond to student needs through timely intervention and enrichment. Campus and district leaders should use assessment information to identify trends, monitor curriculum implementation, evaluate the effectiveness of programs, and guide strategic decision-making. Assessment practices must also ensure equitable access for all learners by providing appropriate accommodations, designated supports, and alternative assessments in accordance with students' individualized educational plans and applicable state and federal requirements.
A Balanced Assessment System
We believe a strong assessment system is coherent, connected, and aligned to a shared vision for teaching and learning, with each assessment serving a distinct and meaningful purpose within the broader system. Assessment practices should reflect the district's core values by creating exceptional learning experiences, fostering an inclusive culture of high expectations and continuous improvement, supporting educators in their instructional practice, maximizing the effective use of time and resources, strengthening partnerships with families, and contributing to safe and productive learning environments. The district is committed to implementing assessment practices that are equitable, legally compliant, and responsive to the diverse needs of students so that every learner has an appropriate opportunity to demonstrate what they know and are able to do.
Family Partnership
Families are essential partners in the learning process. We are committed to communicating assessment information in accessible, timely, and meaningful ways by providing clear reports, resources, and learning supports that help families understand their child's progress. By ensuring families know why assessments are administered, what the results indicate, and how they are used to support instruction, the district promotes shared responsibility for student success and strengthens the partnership between home and school.
Through intentional assessment practices, we create a culture of learning where assessment informs action, strengthens instruction, and supports continuous growth for every student.
