From Leading Off to Mayor of the Day

Congratulations to Arlington Collegiate High School’s Liliana Lozano!

Last week, the ninth grader was Arlington’s mayor for a day.

Arlington ISD ninth grader named Arlington mayor of the dayLozano earned the opportunity to participate in the City of Arlington’s Mayor of the Day program after demonstrating outstanding leadership last year through the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation’s Leading Off Program. The program provides Arlington ISD junior high students with opportunities to develop leadership skills, connect with community leaders, and put those skills into action. Lozano was nominated for the honor by Dr. Ray Smith, one of her teachers at Ousley Junior High.

As part of Mayor of the Day, Lozano experienced local government firsthand. She met with Mayor Jim Ross, toured City Hall, participated in a mock City Council meeting, and learned more about how residents can become involved in their community and help shape Arlington’s future.

Though she is only a ninth grader, Lozano is already planning for her future and hopes to major in marine biology or archaeology when she gets to college.

“I am so proud of Liliana,” said Arlington ISD Superintendent Dr. Matt Smith. “She is truly one of a kind – hardworking, brilliant, and a natural leader. Seeing her honored as Mayor of the Day is incredible, and I know this is just the beginning of great things for her.”
