Ross read the book “Lou”
Arlington mayor Jim Ross is quick thinking for someone who’s 179 years old.
At least that’s the number he gave to second graders at Duff Elementary last Wednesday when he jokingly told them him age.
But when he was asked the real number and answered 64, he was told by one student that their grandparent was only 61.
All Ross could do was laugh because he was having fun doing what he calls his favorite part of the job.
“I get excited because I get to go out and talk to you and find out what our future is,” said Ross. “When I see you it makes me feel good. It’s exciting because you’re our future mayors, presidents and police officers.”
Ross read the book “Lou” to the second graders. The book tells the story of a fire hydrant who knows he’s got big things in store for him but just doesn’t know what. It ends with Lou saving the day.
Ross was able to relate that story to the students by telling the story of his son Jordan who graduated from Lamar High School. Jordan Ross has cerebral palsy but overcame bullying and was embraced by the Lamar football team. His dream was to be an actor and despite the obstacles, has gone on to be a successful actor.
He didn’t listen to me, and he’s successful,” Ross told the students. “Others couldn’t see what was deep inside, but he could.”
After talking about the book, Ross took questions from the students that ranged from his age to the most famous person he’s met (The Rock).
He was also asked the hardest part about his job.
“Sometimes you just have to own things when you make a mistake,” Ross said. “It’s important you own it. Just say you messed up.”
Wise words from the city’s 179-year-old mayor.
