Martin High School graduate Natalia Newsome is making a name for herself in the world of college athletics after a viral highlight showcased one of the most impressive vertical leaps in volleyball.
The Southern Methodist University middle blocker captured national attention when her 40-inch vertical jump during an SMU match spread across social media. But Newsome’s volleyball journey began in Arlington, where she established herself as a standout player for the Martin Warriors.
Newsome’s former coach at Martin, Rhonda Dunn, said she is proud to see her former athlete continue to excel at the collegiate level.
“She worked hard in training,” Dunn said. “We saw so much growth in her game here at Martin, and she was very committed to her sport and her craft. But she was also a great student, friend and teammate to everyone she encountered.”
Newsome credits Martin with helping prepare her both academically and personally for college.
“Martin prepared me for college schoolwise, but as far as volleyball, I built a lot of strong relationships,” Newsome said. “Now, getting to see what those same girls are doing in their careers has been super fun.”
During her sophomore season at SMU, Newsome suited up against Texas Christian University and delivered a jaw-dropping play that sent the internet into a frenzy. Rising well above the net, she hammered home a kill that quickly gained attention across social media.
Basketball stars LeBron James and Sue Bird reacted to the moment online, joining thousands of fans in expressing their amazement. Newsome’s viral performance was later featured by ESPNW and MARCA Sports.
Now entering her junior year at SMU, Newsome has had time to reflect on the path that brought her from Arlington ISD to one of the nation’s top volleyball programs.
“I wasn’t a big name coming out of high school, but now I’m playing for one of the top programs in the country,” she said. “I would just say to focus on your process and pick a school that’s right for you. Find somewhere that you like, where you like the people, and then buy in and take advantage of every opportunity you get.”
As her volleyball career continues to climb to new heights, Newsome remains grateful for the foundation she built at Martin and the relationships that helped her reach the next level.
