A surprise phone call from iHeartRadio’s Billy the Kidd left Atherton Elementary School teacher Kim Vasquez speechless. The host shared that Vasquez was selected for iHeartRadio’s “Thank a Teacher” campaign, powered by DonorsChoose, and would receive a $5,000 DonorsChoose gift card to fund supplies for her first-grade classroom.
“I was absolutely shocked to learn that I was one of four winners across the United States,” said Vasquez. “It is such an incredible honor and blessing to have been chosen. I am so proud to represent Atherton Elementary and Arlington ISD!”
This recognition is especially meaningful for Vasquez as the nomination came from a parent whose two children were once students in her class.
“She is one of the teachers I recommend for her kindness, caring, and genuine love for education. I have seen her work with students with unique skills and handling it professionally,” said parent Kimeko Stigger. “She has never backed down from a challenge, and she has done it with grace. It’s time for the world to know how wonderful she is as a teacher.”
Vasquez has taught at Atherton Elementary for 20 years. She plans to use some of the funds to go toward her “classroom store” that opens every Friday. Students can earn “bucks” throughout the week and cash in to redeem prizes, helping build practical financial literacy skills.
She also plans to invest in resources that will benefit the campus as a whole, specifically funding the creation of a campus motor lab for students.
“The motor lab will provide purposeful movement and sensory activities that support coordination, focus, self-regulation, and readiness to learn,” said principal Bianca Gholston. “We are grateful for her commitment to using this opportunity to benefit every Atherton All-Star!”
While she is honored by the recognition, Vasquez said this award reflects the overall campus culture and school leadership.
“I truly feel that Atherton is the best school,” Vasquez said. “I was so proud to say my school on the radio, and it’s not just my school, it’s Arlington ISD.”
