January is School Board Recognition Month
January is School Board Recognition Month, and we want to spotlight our Board of Trustees and all the great work they do. This year the theme for the month is “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas.”
Today we’re spotlighting Melody Fowler, who has been on the board since 2018 and is also the parent of an Arlington ISD grad.
What are you most excited about for the district in 2025?
There are several things that come to mind. Although he is not new anymore, I am looking forward to seeing Dr. Matt Smith’s continued leadership. In the year that he has served as the AISD superintendent, he has brought fresh eyes to the district and a new vision for the district.
I am also excited about seeing our students’ academic growth. AISD has spent time analyzing our students’ strengths and weaknesses and formulating plans to ensure our students are exceptionally prepared for the future.
What do you think sets Arlington ISD apart from other school districts?
I firmly believe that the opportunities AISD provides for our students are what sets us apart from other districts. Whether it be early college high school, dual enrollment, PTECH programs, career and technical programs, fine arts and languages academies, or other programs, AISD stands out as a district that goes above and beyond to provide unparalleled opportunities for all students in the district, including transportation to and from these programs.
What do you think of the upcoming legislative session?
I have worries, but I also have hope. I want to believe that our representatives and senators want what is best for our students. Our students deserve to feel safe on our campuses. Our students deserve to know that they are more than a one-day test. Our students deserve to be in a district that is fully and fairly funded. Our legislators have the opportunity to show their support of our public schools. It will be interesting to see if they do.
The theme for this Board Appreciation Month is “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas.” How vital a role does a board play in the success of schools?
The Board of Trustees plays a vital role in shaping the district. School boards are responsible for governing public schools. They set goals, standards and policies and ensure that schools have the resources they need to succeed. Everything a board decides affects the students, parents, faculty, staff and community. The decisions we make today will have a lasting effect on the district.
Do you have a favorite pizza place in Arlington?
I love Brick Oven Pizza on Little Road. Their crust is just crisp enough but not too crunchy. Their ingredients are always fresh and delicious. Oh great—-now all I want is a pizza!
