Special Education supports for students with Special Education needs in the Arlington Independent School District are provided along a continuum of options designed to meet their diverse needs. The Special Education Department in AISD believes in supporting students with an Autism Spectrum Disorder through the process of the development of an Individualized Education Program (IEP) based on the critical needs of each unique student.  Students diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder typically experience a triad of impairments in the areas of communication, social / work behavior and imagination or abstract thought. Services, based on each student’s unique needs can range from supports on a student’s home campus with Special Education services, to support on an ABLE support campus in an ABLE support classroom to services in an Alternative Curriculum campus and classroom. Services are based on each student's unique needs. Services can range from supports on a student's home campus with Special Education services, or support on an ABLE support campus in an ABLE support classroom or services in an Alternate Curriculum campus and classroom.

ABLE support classrooms are designed to assist students in closing the achievement and social “gap”, so that the students can perform both academically and socially in grade level general education settings with limited Special Education supports over time.

Services and supports in all environments cover a range of options including but not limited to positive behavioral support, reinforcement procedures, teaching of replacement behaviors and intentional systematic instructional methods to promote acquisition, fluency, maintenance and generalization of skills. Supports are provided when data indicates those needs to be adversely affecting the student’s educational performance in a general education setting.

The Special Education Department believes that, through improved communication and advocacy, research-supported trainings and the commitment to leave no child behind and no teacher unsupported, teachers will develop strategies and skills to support students in less restrictive environments as appropriate based on each student’s needs, as well as in the variety of options available on a continuum.
