How can families help meet the needs of their gifted child?

Families can help meet their child’s unique needs by providing them with a wide variety of experiences. Families should take their gifted child to museums, plays, the library or to local cultural events. They may play new games, sing, do experiments, ask specific questions, engage in sports together, read to and with their child every day, allow time to explore using their imagination and curiosity, build using various materials, and use reflective thinking. Consider the child’s interests and strengths, but encourage them to continue their growth and learning through measured risks. Gifted students have specific social and emotional needs such as a keen awareness and understanding of the world around them. Providing opportunities for students to learn through community service can be very meaningful and relevant to sensitive gifted empathetic students.
